Torture inquiry will cover rendition, pledges QC | Joshua Rozenberg (Guardian)

Philippa Whipple tells legal seminar that claims the Gibson inquiry will ignore rendition of UK nationals is 'simply wrong' Press reports that the government's forthcoming torture inquiry will not investigate rendition are "simply wrong", the inquiry's senior lawyer said on Wednesday. Philippa Whipple QC said the inquiry would be "looking at the extent of the involvement of the UK government and its security and intelligence agencies in the improper treatment of detainees". She was referring in particular to British nationals and residents held by US forces at Guantánamo Bay after the 9/11 terror attacks. "Rendition is, after all, one form of improper treatment," Whipple said. "By rendition, we mean the removal of a detainee from the country of his initial detention, without recourse to a proper legal process. "Recent newspaper reports suggesting we will not look at rendition are simply wrong," she said, while confirming the inquiry would not be looking at military detentions by the UK. David Cameron announced in July that he was setting up an independent inquiry into UK involvement with detainees in overseas counter-terrorism operations. The Detainee Inquiry, as it is calling itself, has three members: the former appeal judge and intelligence services commissioner Sir ...Share With Friends: | | Politics - Top Stories Stories, RSS and RSS Feed via Feedzilla.

John Edwards Seduced a Cooperative Press Corps

Mona Charen, NROThe Washington Post has issued a post-mortem on the career of John Edwards ("American Dream is Irrevocably Undone") and finds tragedy and pathos. "The man born Johnny Reid Edwards had it. Great gobs of potential." He might have been, the Post laments, "a great husband, could have been an enduring statesman ... president."But fate intervened. With his indictment on misuse of campaign funds last week, "America witnessed the latest distasteful episode in ... (the) fall from grace of a political comet."Grace, as any unblinkered observer could detect, is not...

Researchers Make A Stink To Fight Mosquitoes

When they're hungry for blood, mosquitoes can sniff out a human meal. Some researchers are using that sense of smell against the pests. University of California Riverside entomologist Anandasankar Ray explains how odors might one day be used to repel and trap mosquitoes.

Dr. Drew: Allow Weiner to save his marriage

Editor's note: Drew Pinsky is the host of "Dr.Drew" on HLN, shown weeknights at 9 p.m. ET and PT. A practicing physician, he is on the staff at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. Pinsky is also assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Keck USC School of Medicine.

(CNN) -- He's finally come clean. After days of lying, Rep. Anthony Weiner has admitted to what he couldn't cover up any longer.

Here's what everyone wants to know: Why did he lie? Why did he tweet a photo of himself bare-chested, to a woman he'd never met?

Why did a middle-aged, newly married man need attention from women who were strangers? Is he technically a cheater?

Rep. Weiner answered the first question himself. He said he lied because he was embarrassed and didn't want to get caught. Fair enough.

I'll address the others. But I can't say I know what he was thinking, because I don't.

Dr. Drew: Weiner apologizes for "terrible mistakes"

Rep. Weiner doesn't truly know why, either. He certainly didn't contemplate the consequences of his actions. It's hard for most of us to make sense of what people are trying to gain from these sorts of exchanges. What exactly are they hoping to evoke from the people to whom they are sending images?

Pomp, ceremony greet Merkel at White House

German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday in saying Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi must step down, expressing support for the NATO military mission even though her country abstained from the U.N. Security Council vote that authorized it.

At a joint news conference at the White House, Merkel said Germany's participation in NATO operations shows its support for the Libya mission. She also noted that Germany has increased resources to the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan to free other countries to contribute to the Libya mission.
