Senators Target Website That Sells Narcotics

Two U.S. senators said Sunday they will ask federal authorities to crack down on a secretive narcotics market operated on the Internet with anonymous sales and untraceable currency.

Heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines are among the drugs being sold in the well-protected website apparently operating for just a few months.

Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, both Democrats, said they asked the Justice Department and Drug Enforcement Administration to shut down and investigate the website, often referred to as the Silk Road after an ancient Asian trade route.

"This audacious website should be shut down immediately," Manchin said.

"Never before has a website so brazenly peddled illegal drugs online," Schumer said. "By cracking down on the website immediately, we can help stop these drugs from flooding our streets."

The senators planned to release their letters to the agencies on Sunday.
A key to the illicit trade is use of a network by buyers and sellers that conceals their identity. Websites including Gawker have reported on the site.

Schumer said the website began operating in February and uses "layers" of secrecy to thwart authorities. Sellers are told to make shipments in vacuum-sealed bags to avoid drug-detecting dogs.

Former Secretary Of State Lawrence Eagleburger Dies

Lawrence S. Eagleburger, the only career foreign service officer to rise to the position of secretary of state, died Saturday. He was 80.

Eagleburger died in Charlottesville, Va., after a short illness, according to a family friend, Christy Reap. No further details were immediately available.

Tributes poured in immediately, from President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to two of his one-time bosses, former President George H.W. Bush and former Secretary of State James A. Baker III. "As good as they come" was Baker's description.

A straightforward diplomat whose exuberant style masked a hard-driving commitment to solving tangled foreign policy problems, Eagleburger held the top post at the State Department for five months when Baker resigned in the summer of 1992 to help Bush in an unsuccessful bid for re-election.

As Baker's deputy, Eagleburger he had taken on a variety of difficult assignments, including running the department bureaucracy. Baker often was abroad, working on Middle East problems, German reunification and collapse of the Soviet Union, leaving Eagleburger to tend to the home front.

On paper, Republican Mitt Romney seems to be the candidate's candidate.

The son of a former governor, Romney has demonstrated that he can raise swells of campaign cash -- and has the name recognition that helps place him high in presidential preference polls.

Romney, 64, also has the credentials of being a successful businessman and organizer, key aspects to any successful candidate. He founded Bain Capital, a private equity firm, and oversaw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Yemen's President Injured From Attack

Embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was injured Friday after his presidential palace was attacked by tribal fighters armed with rockets. It's a major escalation of the violence in Yemen. The peaceful protests calling for the president's ouster may now be giving way to an all-out battle for power between Yemeni tribes. Michele Norris talks with Hakim Almasmari, the editor in chief for the Yemen Post, about the attacks — and the latest on the unrest in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
