Beyond the 'War,' The Future Of Cancer Treatment

The first written reference to cancer appeared in the 17th century B.C., but physicians are still struggling to understand the disease 4,000 years later. Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, talks about the history of cancer and the future of treatment.

Unemployment Drops To 8.8% (Oliverwillis.com)

Damn it, Barack Obama. The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent last month, the lowest in two years and down from 8.9 percent. That came as employers added 216,000 net jobs, higher than the revised 194,000 gain in February and above the 190,000 in new jobs that analysts had [...] Share With Friends: | | Politics - Top Stories News, RSS Feeds and Widgets via Feedzilla.

Tea Party Rallies Near U.S. Capitol To Keep Pressure For Spending Cuts On GOP

As Tea Party members rallied in Washington while Democratic and Republican lawmakers tried to reach agreement on spending legislation to avert a government shutdown, the grass-roots group had a message for the GOP - no retreat and no surrender on spending cuts.

Weekly Standard: Save American Industry From EPA

The Senate is scheduled to vote this week on a measure that would stop the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases, a vote which upsets some environmentalists. But Mario Loyola of The Weekly Standard argues that it's time for the Senate to stop the EPA's unprecedented power grab.

Michelle Obama's Former Congressional District Ranks Last for Healthy Behavior, Study Finds

Michelle Obama's campaign to get Americans to eat healthier apparently hasn't reached the congressional district she and President Obama used to call home.

The 1st Congressional District of Illinois ranks dead last in the nation for "healthy behavior," according to a new study released by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

The index measured 436 districts, including the 435 U.S. congressional districts and the District of Columbia. The Obamas' former district ranked 436th in 2010, down from 408 in 2009, the first year the Obamas were in the White House.

The top 10 congressional districts for "healthy behavior" were in California. The state's 46th district, which Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher represents, ranked No. 1 and its 14th district, represented by Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo came in second.

The second worst congressional district for "healthy behavior" was Kentucky's 5th district, represented by Republican Rep. Hal Rogers, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. CNSNews.com, which was first to report the survey, suggested that is no surprise since as chairman, Rogers oversees congressional pork -- federal spending on lawmakers' pet projects in their home districts.

The Well-Being Index is the product of a partnership created in 2008 between the polling company Gallup and the health-care company Healthways to develop a system for methodically measuring the well-being of Americans.

Iowa Map Pits Incumbents Against Each Other (Taegan Goddard's Political Wire)

Iowa's nonpartisan redistricting commission "threw an early wrench into the state's redistricting process" proposing a map that would put Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA) and Rep. Steve King (R-IA) into the same district, while also putting Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA) and Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA) into the same district, the Des Moines Register reports. "The map is far from the final say on how Iowa's congressional landscape will appear on the 2012 ballot. Either chamber of the Legislature or the governor can reject the LSA's proposals twice. In the third round, they can amend the map. But if either chamber or the governor reject that, the map would be drawn by the Iowa Supreme Court."
