Political Unrest Worries Counter-Terrorism Officials

U.S. officials are concerned that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi may have stores of mustard gas that could be used against his people or get in terrorists' hands. What's more, the turbulence in the Middle East and North Africa has provided political vacuums ? something that al-Qaida has traditionally tried to exploit.

Early Radiation Data From Near Plant Ease Health Fears

The first ground-level radiation measurements from within a 37-mile radius of the disabled Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant do not reveal any immediate health threat ? and perhaps not even any health problems measurable decades from now, if levels stay where they are.

West Makes Tough Demands On Gadhafi Regime

The Obama Administration was initially reluctant to support military action against the Gadhafi regime. President Obama said Friday the U.S. backing of intervention in Libya was driven, in his words, "by Gadhafi's refusal to respect the rights of his people and the potential for mass murder of innocent civilians." And Friday, U.S., British, and French governments suggested that they will be satisfied with little less than Gadhafi's removal from power.

U.S. Seafood Industry Braces For Japan Crisis Impact

On the import side, there are fears that American sushi customers will steer clear of Japanese fish. As for exports, the broken infrastructure in northeast Japan will make it much harder for producers in the Pacific Northwest to get fish to consumers.

Japan Earthquake May Have Shifted Earth's Axis

Richard Gross, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, calculates that last week's earthquake off Japan's coast may have shortened the length of Earth's days by about 1.26 microseconds and shifted its axis by about 6.5 inches. Gross describes the findings and explains how changes in Earth's land masses affect the way it spins.
