Lawmakers Butt Heads In High-Speed Rail Debate
For years, Republicans in Congress have criticized Amtrak, saying the government should end its funding of the passenger rail service. Now, House Transportation Committee Chairman John Mica is taking a different approach: He wants to open the busy Northeast Corridor, where Amtrak gets the bulk of its revenue, to competition. The rail carrier meanwhile is seeking private investment to upgrade service in the Washington-to-Boston corridor to 220 mph. The drawback: It would take them 30 years to meet that goal.
