Senate Panel Backs Ratification Of Russia Nuke Treaty

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday endorsed a nuclear weapons control treaty signed in April by President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The new START treaty would reinstate the ground inspections that lapsed in December and reduce each country's deployed nuclear arsenal by 30 percent. But with election-year opposition running high, it's unclear whether the full Senate will pass it. Three Republicans voted for the measure in committee; at least eight are needed to reach the two-thirds majority required for ratification.
